8 Coat Trends That Will Dominate This Winter

Winter is coming. In fact, it’s officially here in just under a month so coats are on my mind. A chic topper is the hero of our cold-weather wardrobes and can take a simple outfit from zero to 100 in an instant. That's why I like to carefully consider my outerwear purchases—especially since they’re usually one of the more expensive items I spend on in winter.

So what styles should we add to our outerwear line up this season? Below, I’ve rounded up seven of the biggest coat trends that should not be overlooked this winter. These coats were seen in full force on the F/W 22 runways and are already a hit among the fashion set on Instagram. Included in the mix are timeless silhouettes as well as more trend-forward styles that feel intrinsic to winter 2022. Either way, there’s something to suit every sartorial taste and budget.

Keep scrolling for the biggest coat trends that will dominate this winter.

Maxi hemlines are having a major moment this season—a trend we're seeing dominate on skirts, dresses and now, coats too. Opt for long wool tailored iterations (beloved by the likes of the Olsen Twins) that make any outfit look expensive.
One trend that immediately caught our eye on the fall/winter runways were robe coats—seen in long plush faux fur fabrics that unquestionably add a touch of drama and elegance to any look. If you're looking for a coat that is striking yet cozy, this is the perfect option.
Shearling outerwear continues to be a favorite among the fashion set this season—Totême’s version has been all over our Insta feeds lately, but there are plenty of other budget-friendly faux iterations that pack just as much punch.
One outerwear micro trend that fashion people are fully embracing this cold-weather season is scarf-style coats (thanks in part to the ever-growing popularity of the iconic Totême coat). The silhouette doesn't get more effortlessly elegant and luckily there are plenty of less expensive options cropping up at our favorite retailers.
Leather jackets and coats of all varieties are trending this season but we're particularly drawn to the longline trench coat silhouettes that will keep us warm and sleek this winter.
When the temps take a dip, we'll be living in our quilted coats and puffers this winter. Duvet dressing was ubiquitous on the runways. We saw padded coats seen in both maxi and cropped silhouettes with elevated details such as extra large collars, belts, and built-in scarves.
It's not winter without a generous dose of fuzzy fabrics and whether you opt for a oversize leather moto jacket lined with faux-fur, or a suede '70s silhouette with plush shearling, cozy collars are reigning supreme this cold weather-season.
Ok, so while bombers are generally categorized as jackets not coats, it would be neglectful not to remark on the impact they're having this season. A trend seen all over the runways, this winter opt for an oversize padded option for extra warmth.

Up next, 7 outdated jacket trends we're skipping, and 7 we're buying instead.
