With a new year in play, it’s only natural that one thinks about resetting and as a fashion editor my mind obviously goes to my wardrobe first. Freshening up my wardrobe not only comes with a much-needed clean out but also probes me to reflect on the trends I’m ready to toss and forecast those I’m looking to try out.
Trends are ever changing and in a world plagued by consumerism and quick, easy purchasing, I’ve found it an important introspection to make sure I’m abiding by at least a one-in, one-out policy with my closet.
Living a fast-paced, city lifestyle and realizing that investing in my clothing is of utmost importance, I found that the A-list clothes I’m looking forward to adding all hinge on practicality. And in return, the ones I’m losing are those that don’t offer that same functionality. A few I’m tossing include micro mini bags, impractical stilettos, and Y2k baby tees, and in return, I’m adding medium-sized shoppers, sensible sling backs, and athletic jerseys.
Below, I’ve detailed all the exciting trends I’m looking forward to bringing in this year as well as an accompanying shopping list in case you’re looking for a refresh too.
On the top of my list is to throw out my over worn, hole-y leggings. I'm swapping for a pair of trend-forward sweatpants. Sporty iterations like the below can be elevated with longline coats, oversized blazers, or crisp button downs.
As someone with a low tolerance for a heel, the kitten sling back trend is definitely getting a warm welcome. It seems everywhere I turn, fashion people are sporting versions of the practical shoe from shiny metallic to dainty satin to buckle-adorned.
Practicality is definitely in and therefore, mini bags are on my "toss" list. It's no secret that adorably petite bags doesn't offer much function–even on a cheeky night out. I'm opting to swap for the uber-sensible mid-size shopper that holds all the essentials. It's not quite to the overwhelming status of a carryall, which is why it makes the perfect bag for any occasion.
Following a year of the micro mini skirt, I am gladly embracing the era of the circle skirt. Flouncy, full skirts covered the spring summer 2024 runways from Bottega Veneta to Dior. The best part of these sophisticated midi skirts? They're perfect for work or play.
When it comes to jeans, I'm turning to comfort this year. Gone are my days of breaking in newly-washed stiff denim. Thus enter dramatic wide-leg silhouette that offer a trouser-like looseness.
The Y2k baby tee has seen its day in my wardrobe. I'm trading these shrunken silhouettes for a "blokecore" staple, the athletic jersey. My styling plans include pairing with the aforementioned circle skirt or wide leg jeans.
